Advanced Medical Care Chosen in Japan — An Australian Patient Shares Her Experience with Proton Beam Therapy and Seamless Medical Coordination 

An Australian patient diagnosed with recurrent giant prolactinoma, a challenging condition to treat, underwent proton beam therapy at the Southern Tohoku Proton Therapy Center in Fukushima, Japan. 

The patient spoke highly of the compassionate and attentive care provided by Japanese medical staff and interpreters, as well as the calm and welcoming atmosphere of Koriyama City. “I was truly impressed by how wonderful everyone was,” the patient shared repeatedly. 
Between treatment sessions, the patient made the most of the time in Japan—visiting local libraries and tourist sites, and even going to a hair salon—embracing daily life with a positive outlook. 

The treatment progressed smoothly, and blood test results remained favorable. The patient actively consulted with the attending physician regarding daily physical changes and concerns, and was reassured that these symptoms were not treatment-related side effects. 

To ensure continuity of care after returning home, the medical team proposed ongoing information-sharing with the patient’s physician in Australia. The patient expressed a desire to return to Japan for future follow-up examinations, reflecting the strong trust that had been established. On the final day of treatment, the patient took commemorative photos with staff and received a heartfelt message card—moments that highlighted Japan’s distinctive spirit of hospitality. 

The patient also shared: 
“I was deciding between Japan and Singapore for treatment, but chose Japan because the EAJ coordinator clearly explained both what was possible and what was not.”
