Surgical Therapy for Cancer
23.09.29
There are many different types of cancer surgery, depending on the type, stage, and location of the cancer. Some common types of cancer surgery are listed below.
Type of surgery:
・Resection Surgery:
This is a surgical procedure to remove the tumor or cancerous tissue. The extent of partial or total resection depends on the type and stage of the cancer.
・Lymph Node Dissection:
Surgery to remove surrounding lymph nodes to prevent cancer cells from spreading to the lymph nodes.
・Reconstructive Surgery:
It is a surgical procedure to repair a defect after resection surgery. Examples include breast reconstruction surgery and intestinal reconstruction surgery.
・Laparoscopic Surgery:
This method uses an endoscope through a small incision. Laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgeries are available.
・Radiosurgery:
A surgical procedure that uses radiation to incinerate cancerous tissue. Gamma Knife and CyberKnife are used.
・Liver Transplantation:
In some cases of liver cancer, transplantation of the entire liver may be necessary.
Surgical procedures by site:
・Craniotomy:
It is a procedure performed as part of brain tumor resection or neurosurgery
・Thoracic Surgery:
Surgery for cancers of the chest, such as lung cancer and esophageal cancer. It includes lung resection surgery.
・Urologic Surgery:
Surgery for urological cancers such as kidney, bladder, and prostate cancer.
・Thyroid Surgery:
Surgery for thyroid cancer and thyroid tumors
・Skin Surgery:
Surgery for skin cancers such as skin cancer and melanoma
・Orthopedic Surgery:
Surgery for osteosarcoma and other cancers of the bones and joints.
・Robot-assisted surgery:
Robotic-assisted cancer surgery is expected to improve precision of procedure, shorten patient recovery time, and reduce complications. Japan is one of the countries with high technology in the field of robot-assisted surgery. Japanese medical institutions have introduced advanced surgical robots, and robot-assisted surgery is used in many cancer surgeries and other surgical procedures.
・Robotic Prostatectomy:
Robotic-assisted surgery is widely used for radical removal of prostate cancer. A surgeon operates a surgical robot to perform a precise resection. This method decreases postoperative complications and shortens recovery time.
・Robotic Hysterectomy:
It is applied to hysterectomies. By using a robot, precise operation and early recovery are expected.
・Robotic Gastrectomy:
Gastrectomy and partial gastrectomy are performed. Robots are suitable for surgery in confined spaces and can perform precise tissue resection.
・Robotic Nephrectomy:
Robotic-assisted surgery is used for partial or total kidney removal. The use of a robot allows for precise manipulation and is important to maximize the patient’s renal function.
・Robotic Lung Surgery:
Robotic-assisted surgery is used for lung resections and other surgical procedures. Robots provide better access to the microscopic tissue within the lungs and improve surgical precision.
